We all know who Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu is, but his video companion Jake Mackenzie is a little less well-known but still quite popular. Jake is a freaking magician in both the deep half guard and the conventional half guard. He’s utilized it to win several events in Brazil and throughout the world.

The Competition Guard Secrets collection consists of four volumes.
Volume One teaches the Deep Half Guard, while Volume Two teaches the Closed Guard.
Volume Four – FightSports All-Stars Volume Three – Drills
The Half/Deep Half guard DVD was my major emphasis. After all, who wouldn’t want to see some strategies like that broken down after watching the video above of Jake displaying his outstanding talent in the Deep Half?
It’s a well-produced collection. The lighting and camera angles are enough, and the audio is adequate, but there is a tiny echo, which is amplified when they display the position from the other side (with their backs to the camera).
List of Deep Half Guard Volume Techniques:
1/2 Guard
Elevator Sweep Spin Under Lapel Choke VR To Knee Tap Sweep VR To Limp Arm VR To Superman Sweep
1/2 Deep Guard
Waiter Cleaning
Basic Out the Back Door Slide Out to Double Scissor Sweep Counter when Opponent attempts to switch base Basic Back Take Rolling Back Take Taking Mount Flying Submission (Triangle/Armbar Combo)
1/2 Guard Reverse
Cyborg Elevator Sweep (ridiculous)
Grab Your Sleeves Twice (variation of Cyborg)
One in and one out guard
Arm Drag Lapel Choke
Jake is quite clear while speaking, and the angles are appropriate for most of the methods. I wish some of the angles were clearer and showed more depth on some of the movements.
When they wish to demonstrate another viewpoint, they turn their bodies, like most instructional videos do. The DVD is put out nearly like a seminar, not quite like the Buchecha DVD, which is literally a seminar, but they are teaching it like a seminar.
They demonstrate the process several times, showing different views with the same features each time.
Overview of DVD Techniques: The first set of techniques are fundamental maneuvers that many people are already familiar with, with the same specifics that most teachers teach. However, very effective approaches with a high success rate.
Nothing groundbreaking, but it’s great to see that they included it.
White Belt + rating
The deep half series is well described, and he demonstrates all of the strategies presented in the Jitizipedia x Avant Guarde Brand Video.
To accomplish most of these, you’ll need a thorough awareness of the position and your opponent’s balance.
For them, I’d guess Blue Belt or above.
The reverse half guard segment of the DVD is unique. Few individuals have shown skills from here. I’ve seen a number of educational films, but I don’t recall anybody providing possibilities from here.
Jake and Cyborg present you with three excellent choices from this position and thoroughly discuss them. The Cyborg Sweep from here is crazy, but it’s a terrific tool if you can pull it off.
I believe a good white belt would be able to accomplish the first one, but not the next two.
I’ve never seen the One In/One Out option for the man on the bottom before. We’ve all seen the top guy’s tactics. Two excellent techniques for the person on the bottom to attack from a very frequent situation that we all find ourselves in.
